What does the future of landuse in Australia look like? Over 100 leaders from Australia’s conservation, land management, natural resources management, agriculture, forestry, water, tourism, outdoor recreation, Indigenous, carbon and philanthropic sectors met in Kingscliff NSW on 6 and 7 October 2009 to discuss this critical issue. The Summit heard from a range of internationally and nationally prominent speakers including Harvey Locke from the Wild Foundation in the US, about cooperation and partnerships across the landscape and across land tenures for sustainability, conservation and climate change resilience.

For the first time in Australia’s history, this Summit brought together the leadership from across the spectrum of land management in Australia to commence a national dialogue aimed at shaping the future by making the vision of an interconnected natural landscape across Australia a reality.

The Hon Peter Garrett AM MP, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts opened the Summit.

Following the Summit, The Kingscliff Communiqué was finalised to convey the urgency for action to Australia’s governments at all levels.

This Summit was the first step in developing a coordinated response to the conservation of Australia’s ecosystems in the face of climate change. We need to work together with Indigenous people, private landholders and the business sector at a continental scale to tackle this problem.

Our aim is to connect people and connect land in a Natural Defence Strategy for Australia!
